Selena Gomez was born in Grand Prairie, Texas, is the only child of the family of Ricardo Gomez and Mandy Cornett, a former stage actress who gave birth to Selena at the age of 16 years. Her parents divorced when she was 5 years old, in 1997.
Mandy's mother remarried in 2006 with Brian Teefy. Gomez was named after Tejano singer Selena. Her father is Mexican and mother is a descendant of Italy. Gomez said that when he was a child he developed an interest in acting from watching her mother perform in theater productions. "My mother has played in many theater shows, and I often see her practicing.
When she was getting ready for the stage and put on her makeup, I sat behind him. She said, "You memorize the story better than me!" One day I said to my mother, "I want to be like my mother!"

In 2009, Gomez appeared as a guest star as herself in one episode, from the Disney Channel television Lovato's Sonny With a Chance, titled "Battle of the Network Stars". Gomez, along with two members of the cast of Wizards of Waverly Place appeared on television three-way cross-over episode with Hannah Montana and The Suite Life on Deck, titled Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana. On February 2009, Gomez signed on the star as one of the two female leads in Ramona and Beezus movie adaptation of the novel the children series by Beverly Cleary. In October, 2009, it was confirmed that Gomez is attached to star as the leader in What Boys Want.
